a market-town of England, county of Chester, at the confluence of the Rivers Dane and Croke, 20 miles E. of Chester. The town, though small, contains many good houses, and has a commodious parish church, three dissenting places of worship, a free grammar school, a newsroom, and library. Salt is largely manufactured here from brine springs in the vicinity. There are also manufactures of silk and cotton stuffs; breweries and brick works. Pop. (1851) 1235.
