a town in the United States of North America, capital of the state of Georgia, is situated on the W. bank of the Oconee River, 80 miles W.S.W. of Augusta. It stands in a beautiful and fertile cotton country, and contains a number of handsome residences. The river supplies excellent water power; and was once navigated below by small steamers, but these are now superseded by railroads. A branch railroad, 17 miles long, extends S. to Gordon on the central railroad, and another extends in the opposite direction to Eatonton. Pop. (1850) 3200.
