South, an old market-town and municipal borough of England, county of Devon, on the right bank of the Mole, 26 miles N.N.W. of Exeter. It has an ample market-place and several well-built and cleanly-kept streets. The principal building is the parish church, a Gothic edifice of the fifteenth century, containing a richly-carved stone pulpit. It has also a guildhall and a borough jail. Moluccas. Manufactures of coarse woollen fabrics and lace are carried on here. The borough is governed by a mayor, 3 aldermen, and 12 councillors. Market on Saturday. Pop. (1851) 4482. In the neighbourhood are some rich copper mines, where gold is occasionally found. About 3 miles to the N.E. is a small village called North Molton.
