a town of France, capital of the arrondissement of the same name, in the department of Loiret, is situated on the Loing, 40 miles E.N.E. of Orleans. The town, which is partly walled, is well but irregularly built, and formerly contained a castle, which was entirely destroyed in 1809. Montargis has a church, two hospitals, and a theatre. Manufactures of cloth, leather, and paper are carried on here; and the town has a considerable trade in cattle, corn, honey, wax, leather, &c. Pop. 7757.
