Volume 15 · 153 words · 1860 Edition

or MORON DE LA FRONTERA, a town of Spain, in the province of Seville, is situated on an irregular slope near the Guadalira, 32 miles S.E. of Seville. The town is irregularly built, for in some parts the streets are narrow, crooked, and lined with low buildings; and in others they are wide and straight, and the houses lofty. It contains a handsome church, several monasteries and nunneries, nine schools, three hospitals, and a town-house. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in agriculture; but there are manufactories of hats, soap, oil, earthenware, linen, &c. The chalk of Moron is much used for making whitewash, for which the town is famous throughout Spain. There is also some trade carried on in wool and oil. To the east of the town stand the remains of an old Moorish castle of great strength, which was blown up by the French on their retreat in 1812. Pop. 10,192.
