a town of European Russia, capital of a district in the government of Tambov, is situated on the right bank of the Tsna, 805 miles S.E. of St Petersburg, 358 S.E. of Moscow, and 58 N. of Tambov. It has manufactories of linen, sail-cloth, tallow, vitriol, and paper; besides a ropework, and fulling and saw-mills. An active trade is carried on in grain, honey, and live stock. Pop. (1851) 10,638. The district has a fertile soil, rich pastures, and is well wooded.
