a town of Algeria, in Lat. 36. 10. N., Long. 0. 15. E., is situated on a limestone rock, 233 feet above the sea, and about 1½ miles from the coast. It is divided into two parts by a fertile valley, laid out in gardens and traversed by a small stream. That which stands on the left side of the stream is the town proper, the other part being inhabited exclusively by the military. The town has very much a French appearance, with wide streets and handsome squares. The principal buildings are a theatre and a large hospital. Leather, carpets, jewellery, &c., are manufactured; and an extensive trade is carried on with the interior. The harbour is not good, but it is much frequented. The neighbouring country is fertile and well-cultivated; and grain, wool, hides, and dried fruits are the principal exports. Pop. 6469.
