a market-town of Ireland, in Queen's County, situated on a bend of the River Owenas, 45 miles W.S.W. of Dublin. The houses are well built; and the town contains a parish church, and four other churches, belonging to Roman Catholics, Methodists, and Quakers; a court-house, a bank, several schools, a dispensary, and a poor's-house. The manufacturing industry of the place is active; and there are flour-mills, an iron and brass foundry, breweries, soap-works, tanneries, and potteries. The trade is considerable; and eight yearly fairs are held here. The population consists to a large extent of Quakers, and amounts to 3657.
