a town of European Russia, in the province of Moghilev, is situated on the right bank of the Vekhra, 55 miles E.N.E. of Moghilev. It contains six churches and a synagogue, several convents, and a college formerly belonging to the Jesuits. Linen is manufactured here; and an active trade is carried on with Riga in corn, hemp, and flax. This province formed a part of the ancient duchy of Lithuania. Pop. (1851) 6675.
