Volume 15 · 157 words · 1860 Edition

market-town of Ireland, capital of the county of West Meath, is situated on the Brosna, 44 miles W. by N. of Dublin, with which it is connected by the railway to Galway and by the Royal Canal. The principal street, which is about a mile in length, extends from E. to W., and the other streets and lanes extend in different directions from it. The houses are well built of stone, and covered with slates. The principal buildings are,—the parish church, with a tower and spire; a large and hand- Mummy, some Roman Catholic church; Presbyterian and Wesleyan churches; a court-house, jail, infirmary, and mummery; barracks for 1000 soldiers; and several schools. Tanning and brewing are carried on; and wool constitutes the principal article of trade. Mullingar formerly sent two members to the Irish Parliament, but was disfranchised at the Union. A weekly market is held here on Thursdays; and there are four annual fairs. Pop. 5026.
