MYLAÈ (Milazzo), an ancient town of Sicily, was situated about 30 miles W. from Cape Pelorus, on the isthmus of a peninsula of 5 miles in length. It assisted, according to Strabo, in 648 B.C., in colonizing Himera. It was for many centuries a dependency of the Greek colony of Messana. Laches took it in 427 B.C.; and the Reginans, in 394 B.C., attempted to make it the seat of an opposition to Messana. It enjoyed separate municipal privileges in the time of Pliny; and its importance as a military station is still great.
