Volume 16 · 134 words · 1860 Edition

the reputed author of an ancient history of the Britons, entitled Historia Britonum, is said to have been abbot of Bangor at the beginning of the seventh century. The book which is ascribed to him commences with a fabulous account of the colonization of the island, and brings the narrative down to the year 655. Its chronological blunders, and the many other proofs of its want of authenticity, render it a very unsafe historical authority. It is chiefly valuable on account of its containing those stories of King Arthur, Merlin, and other legendary heroes, which became such favourite themes among the authors of succeeding ages. The latest editions of the Historia Britonum are those by the Rev. W. Gunn, B.D., Svo, London, 1819; and Mr Joseph Stevenson, Svo, London, 1838. (Wright's Biographia Britannica Literaria.)
