a town of France, depart- ment of Eure-et-Loire, at the foot of a steep hill in a beautiful valley on the left bank of the Huise, 33 miles W.S.W. of Chartres. On the hill are the ruins of an old castle, which was once the residence of the celebrated Sully. In the town are three churches, one of which is as old as the eleventh century, three hospitals, a chamber of manufactures, a college, and a court of the first resort. There are also dye-houses and fulling-mills, as well as manufactories of leather, serge, cotton yarn, sieves, &c. An active trade is carried on in linen, hemp, clover-seed, hay, cattle, and other articles. Pop. (1856) 6542.
