an ancient province of France, bounded on the N. by the English Channel; E. by Picardy and the Isle of France; S. by Perche, Maine, and Brittany; and W. by the English Channel; had a length of about 150 miles, a breadth of 75, and an area of 10,534 square miles. It now comprises the departments of Seine-Inferieure, Eure, Calvados, Manche, and the greater part of Orne. Its ancient name was Neustria; but it was designated Normandy in A.D. 912, when it was conquered by the Normen under Rolf, the brother of the first Scandinavian Earl of Orkney.
