NOVEMBER

Volume 16 · 64 words · 1860 Edition

the eleventh month of our modern year, was the ninth in the old Roman calendar. On this account the name November or Novembris (from novem, nine) was assigned to it in the Alban calendar. It consisted originally of thirty days, but Julius Caesar added one to it. Augustus, however, again reduced it to its original number, which it has ever since retained. (See CALENDAR.)
