a market-town of England, county of Buckingham, on the left bank of the Ouse, which is here crossed by a bridge of four arches, 18 miles E.N.E. of Buckingham. The town is small but neat, and is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is chiefly celebrated as having been for a lengthened period the residence of the poet Cowper, during which time the Rev. John Newton was curate here. The parish church is a large Gothic edifice, with a spire 185 feet high. There are several almshouses and dissenting places of worship. The inhabitants are employed in lace-making, hosiery, and silk-weaving. Pop. of parish (1851), 2329.
