OLORON

(the ancient Iluro), a town of France, capital of a cognominal arrondissement in the department of Basses-Pyrénées, stands on the summit and slope of a hill, on the right bank of the Gave d'Ossau, where it unites with the Gave d'Aspe to form the Gave d'Oloron, 15 miles S.W. of Pau. It is the seat of a tribunal of primary instance, and carries on an active trade in wool, sheep-skins, hams, cattle, and timber. The principal manufactures are woollen cloths and yarn, hosiery, leather, paper, and combs. Pop. (1856) 5869.
