a town of India, capital of a raj or principality of the same name in Bundelcund, 131 miles N. of Sambor, 142 S.E. of Agra, and 743 N.W. of Calcutta; N. Lat. 25° 21', E. Long. 78° 42'. It is built on a rocky hill, is about 3 miles in circuit, and is surrounded by an uncemented wall of unhewn stones, which has three lofty gateways. In the town is a fortress, separated from the rest of the buildings by a branch of the Betwa, which is filled with water during the time of the inundations, and crossed by a wooden bridge. In the fortress stands the residence of the raja, and a handsome palace; while in the town there is a temple adorned with lofty spires. The raj of Oorcha, which is also frequently called Tebreez, from a town of that name, where the raja generally resides, has an area of 2160 square miles, yields a revenue of £60,000 per annum, and maintains a force of 7000 or 8000 men.
