a town of European Russia, in the government of Tver, on a small promontory in Lake Seliger, 110 miles W. of the town of Tver. The houses are for the most part built of wood; but there is a large bazaar, containing the shops, which are all of brick. There are several churches, courts of justice, a nunnery, school, and several hospitals. Malt, leather, and tallow are made, as well as boats for the Volga. Some trade is carried on in corn, salt, meat, leather, tallow, timber, &c. Pop. (1849) 8254.
