a town of Hanover, in the principality of Grubenhagen, and circle of Hildesheim, stands on the Söse, at the foot of the Hartz Mountains, 10 miles S.E. of Einbeck. It is surrounded by walls, and contains several churches, a town-hall, an infirmary, and Latin school. The castle, now used as a granary, is a large stone edifice. Osterode is the chief manufacturing town in Hanover, producing linen, woollen, and cotton stuffs; nails, wooden articles, shot, needles, &c. There are also breweries, distilleries, and tanneries.
