a town of England, county of Lancaster, on the Calder, 4 miles W. of Burnley, and 15 E. of Preston. It is small and not very well built; containing a parish church with an old tower, and places of worship for Methodists, Baptists, and Unitarians, as well as several schools. In the vicinity there are coal mines; and the manufacture of cotton goods is actively carried on. Three annual fairs are held here. Pop. 4509.
