a small seaport of Spain, province of Huelva, on a bay of the Atlantic. From this place Columbus sailed, August 3, 1492, on his first voyage; and here he landed, March 15, 1493, after the discovery of America. Here also Cortes landed in 1528, after the conquest of Mexico. In the neighbourhood is the convent where Columbus, asking alms, was received by the prior, Juan Perez de Marchena, through whose influence at court he was permitted to undertake his voyage.
