a small kingdom on the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula, subject to Siam. It is the most fertile portion of Malacca; rice and salt are obtained in large quantities; and these articles, as well as tin, are exported. The chief town, Patani, stands on the coast, N. Lat. 7°, E. Long. 105° 35′; and was formerly much resorted to by vessels trading between India and China, though at present it is rarely visited. There is, however, some communication kept up between this place and Singapore. Patani is also the name of a cape on this coast, at the entrance of the Gulf of Siam.
