a market-town of England, in the county of Stafford, on the Penk, an affluent of the Trent, here crossed by a stone bridge, 53 miles S. of Stafford, and 131 N.W. of London. It consists of two principal streets, uniting near the bridge; and contains a parish church with a square tower, places of worship belonging to Methodists and Independents, and a national school. The lower part of the town is subject to inundations of the river. There are 3 annual fairs; and yearly races are held in September. Pop. (1851) 2663.
