the capital of Escambia county, in the state of Florida, North America, stands on the W. shore of Pensacola Bay, about 10 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and 64 E. from Mobile. The harbour is safe, but admits only vessels of light draught. The town is regularly built; and contains several churches, a market-house, court-house, and custom-house. About 6 miles below the town, and 5 from the entrance of the harbour, is a U.S. navy station, covering nearly 80 acres of ground, and surrounded by a high brick wall. Pop. of town (1850) 2164.
