a river of European Russia, rises in the Ural Mountains, on the borders of the governments of Perm and Vologda, flows at first westwards, and then through extensive flat moors in a curve towards the N., traversing the governments of Vologda and Archangel. After a course of 1300 miles, having acquired a great breadth, it falls into the gulf of Pustosersk by several mouths. For nearly nine months in the year this gulf is blocked up with ice. Among the numerous affluents of the river, the largest are the Ússa from the right, and the Ishma from the left.
