a town of European Russia, capital of a circle in the government of Saratov, stands on both sides of the Medveditsa, 70 miles N.N.W. of Saratov. It has a ruined castle, seven churches, a convent, two schools, and a benevolent institution. Many bees are reared in the vicinity. Pop. (1848) 7631.
