a market-town of England, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 26 miles N.N.E. of York, and 18 S.S.W. of Whitby. It is a long, straggling town; and contains a large old parish church with a tall spire, and an ancient castle. The Independents, Quakers, Swedenborgians, and Primitive and Wesleyan Methodists have places of worship here. The town has also a court-house, several schools, and a savings-bank. The manufacture of brooms is largely carried on, the materials being obtained from the surrounding moors. In the vicinity some Roman remains have been discovered. Pop. (1851) 2511.
