a town of Naples in the province of Principato Citra, on the shore of the gulf of the same name, 22 miles S. of Diana. It has a Gothic cathedral, and was once a place of much importance; but it was taken and sacked by the Turks in the sixteenth century, and has never since recovered its former prosperity. There is a good harbour; and the inhabitants are actively engaged in fishery. Pop. 7000.
