PORTOBELLO, a parliamentary and municipal burgh of Scotland, and a suburb of Edinburgh, in the county of Mid-Lothian, on the S. shore of the Firth of Forth, 3 miles E. of Edinburgh. The older streets are narrow, but there are many elegant streets of recent erection. There are here places of worship belonging to the Established Church, the Free Church, the United Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Independents, and Roman Catholics. Portobello is much resorted to during the summer for bathing. The beach is sandy and gently sloping; and the town contains hot and cold baths. Many of the inhabitants are employed in the manufacture of bricks and tiles, pottery, flint-glass, and paper; and there are salt-works at the village of Joppa, which is within the limits of the burgh. The burgh is governed by a provost and nine councillors; and it unites with Leith and Musselburgh in returning a member to Parliament. Pop. (1851) 3497.
