a town of Tuscany, capital of the island of Elba, occupies a promontory on the N. coast of the island. It is fortified and defended by two forts on the hill above. There are in the town, which is well built, two parish churches, courts of law, a theatre, hospital, barracks, &c. Iron is exported from the mines in the vicinity; and there is an excellent harbour. Napoleon I. resided at Porto Ferajo from May 1814 till February 1815. Pop. 4436.
