a parliamentary borough and market-town of Wales, in the county of Radnor, on the borders of Hereford, in a fertile valley watered by the Lug, 6 miles E. by N. of Radnor, and 151 W.N.W. of London. The parish church is a large ancient building containing several curious monuments, and an altar-piece of tapestry. There are here also Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and Baptist churches, a free grammar school, a county-hall, and a jail. Large quantities of malt are made here; and there is some trade in timber. Pop. (1861) 1617.
