a town of British India, in the presidency of Bombay and province of Sattara, stands on the Beema, an affluent of the Kistna, 112 miles S.E. of Poona, and 185 S.E. of Bombay. It is well and regularly built, containing several palaces, and a celebrated temple of Vishnu, which is an object of great reverence to the Brahmans. There is here a large market, which is well supplied with the produce of the country and with British goods. Pop. about 20,000.
