a village and parish of England, in the county of Surrey, on the right bank of the Thames, opposite to Fulham, with which it is connected by a wooden bridge, 6 miles S.W. of St Paul's. The old church, which was partially rebuilt in the time of Henry VII., contains some interesting tombs and monuments. Besides places of worship for Independents and Wesleyans, Putney has national infant, and endowed schools. It is celebrated as the birth-place of the historian Gibbon. Pop. of the parish (1831) 5280.
