a market-town of England, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, on the left bank of the Swale, 53 miles N.W. of York. It contains various dissenting churches and two endowed schools. Lead is obtained in the vicinity. Besides weekly markets, several annual fairs are held here. Pop. (1851) 1344.
