a frontier town of France, capital of an arrondissement in the department of Ardennes, in a beautiful plain in the midst of the forest of Ardennes, 15 miles N.N.W. of Mézières. It is strongly fortified; and contains a foundry for cannon-balls and other projectiles. In the neighbourhood of the town Condé gained a great victory over the Spaniards in 1643. Pop. (1856) 2686.
