or Rodosjng (anc. Rhodestus, or Bisantia), a town of European Turkey, Roumelia, on a picturesque bay on the Sea of Marmora, 77 miles W. of Constantinople. It is defended by walls and towers, and contains many good streets, several mosques, and a large covered bazaar. There is here a harbour, by means of which an active trade in corn, wine, &c., is carried on. In the surrounding country there are many extensive gardens, from which large quantities of fruits and vegetables are sent to the town. Fishing is also carried on to some extent. Pop. 26,000.
