the capital of the principality of Schwartzburg-Rudolstadt, in a valley on the left bank of the Saale, 16 miles S. of Weimar. The castle of Heidecksburg, where the prince resides, occupies the summit of a hill, about 200 feet above the river, and contains some good paintings and plaster casts. In the town are a theatre, a museum of natural history, and several benevolent and other establishments. Pop. 4000.
