a town of Sicily, occupying a beautiful situation on a hill, in the province and 20 miles S.E. of Trapani. It is fortified, and has a large number of churches and convents; but the inhabitants are chiefly distinguished for laziness and dirt. There is no manufacture or commerce here. Salemi is believed to occupy the site of the ancient Halycies. Pop. 8000.
