Iskenderoon, or Alexandretta**, a town of Asiatic Turkey, the seaport of Aleppo, from which it is distant 65 miles W.N.W., on the S.E. shore of the bay of Scanderoon. It is a meanly-built place, and very unhealthy on account of the marshes that surround it; but some improvement has recently been effected by the draining of one of the largest of these, and the harbour is the best on the Syrian coast. It is one of the principal seats of the maritime trade of Syria. Pop. 800.
