a market-town of England, in the county and 11 miles S.E. of Durham. It is an old-fashioned town, built on a hill, with a large square containing a market cross. The parish church is cruciform, in the early English style, and has some interesting monuments. There are also places of worship for Wesleyans and Roman Catholics, a free grammar school, almshouses, &c. Many of the people are employed in shoemaking. Pop. of the parish, 2192.
