a town of Lombardy, capital of a province of the same name, on the Adda, 57 miles N.N.E of Milan. It contains numerous churches, a theatre, hospital, gymnasium, and other schools, courts of law, &c. The Malero, a mountain-stream, which here joins the Adda, has several times destroyed the town by its inundations; but it is now confined by strong stone erections in a deep and wide bed. Pop. 4731.
