a market-town of England, in the county and 16 miles S.S.W. of Durham, in a beautiful valley on a branch of the Tees. It consists of one long street, and contains an old and handsome church, four Dissenting places of worship, and several schools. In the vicinity there are lead-works. Pop. 2447.
