a town of the Chinese empire, capital of the island of Formosa, on its west coast, N. Lat. 23° 8', E. Long. 120° 22'. It contains two celebrated temples, and the fort of Zellandia, erected by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. The trade of the place was formerly considerable, but has of late declined, as the harbour has become so choked up with sand as to admit none but small vessels. Pop. 50,000.
