or SANTA ANNA DE TAMAULIPAS, a seaport of Mexico, in the department of Tamaulipas, on the Panuco, about 5 miles above its mouth, and 215 N.W. of Vera Cruz. It has broad regular streets, and many good houses of brick or stone. There are here two churches, a custom-house, prison, and two hospitals. Tampico exports hides, tallow, bones, and salt beef; to Great Britain and the United States. The harbour is unsafe, and a dangerous bar at the mouth of the river prevents the approach of large vessels. Pop. 7000.
