a town of Mexico, in the department and 150 miles E.S.E. of Oaxaca, 10 miles above the mouth of the small river Tehuantepec, in the bay of the same name. It has salt-works and cotton factories, and many of the inhabitants are employed in the fishery of pearls, and of a shell-fish that yields a purple dye. A considerable coasting trade is carried on. Pop. 14,000.
