a market-town of England, in the county and 17 miles S.S.E. of Gloucester, on a hill near the source of the Lower Avon. It contains two market-houses, a handsome parish church with a spire, places of worship for Baptists and Independents, a grammar-school, and almshouses. Woollen cloth is made here; and there is some trade in butter, cheese, and yarn. Pop. of the parish, 3325; of the town, 2615.
