or Celestial Mountains, a range in Central Asia, stretching from W. to E. along the N. boundary of the great tableland, and separating Thian-Shan-Nan-loo, or Turkestan proper, on the S., from Thian-Shan-Pe-loo, or Dzungaria, on the N. The length of the range is estimated by Humboldt at upwards of 2000 miles; and many of the summits rise to the height of 16,000 or 17,000 feet, far above the snow-line. These mountains exhibit many traces of volcanic agency; and eruptions are recorded by the Chinese as having occurred in comparatively recent times.
