a fortified town of France, on the left bank of the Moselle, capital of an arrondissement, in the department of Moselle, 17 miles north of Metz. It is for the most part well built, with broad but irregular streets; and it has a parish church, market-house, theatre, barracks, college, and hospital; hosiery, oil, brandy, leather, &c., are made here; and there is a considerable trade in corn, hemp, and flax.
