a market-town of England, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on the right bank of the Don, 28 miles S. by E. of York, and 166 N. by W. of London. It has an ancient parish church, several dissenting places of worship, three schools, a mechanics' institute, and some trade in corn, timber, and coal.
